Music made in the moment

No click track. No predetermined arrangement. A dialogue between modular electronics and acoustic drums.

Music made in real time

quasimodal brings Gaz Williams’s evolving modular synthesizer systems into dialogue with drummer Greg White. The electronics provide voices, patterns, textures and unexpected turns; the acoustic drums respond with their own energy and momentum. Rather than lock the drummer to a sequence, the pair work to find tempo, tension and shape together.

The aim is not simply to jam indefinitely. It is to make spontaneous music that has the dynamics and apparent intention of a composition — even though neither performer knows exactly where it will go.

An evolving performance archive

The duo has recorded hundreds of extended improvisations, often lasting ten to twenty minutes. The growing archive offers raw material for listening, editing and possible releases, as well as a document of how the musical conversation has developed.

For Gaz, the project joins a long-standing interest in experimental performance, instrument design and the boundary between structured and freely improvised music. For Greg, acoustic drumming remains an active partner rather than an accompaniment to a fixed electronic clock.
