The Rumble-O’s performing together on an outdoor stage

BRISTOL / INSTRUMENTAL SURF ROCK

The Rumble-O’s

Vintage surf sounds, original music and a distinctive live energy.

The band

The Rumble-O’s are a Bristol-based instrumental surf-rock band whose music draws on the directness and melodic character of early surf instrumentals. Gaz Williams has performed with the group since 2011, alongside numerous other musical projects. The band’s live shows combine a strong sense of rhythm, memorable themes and an infectious enjoyment of playing together.

The Endless Summer

In 2014, The Rumble-O’s were commissioned to create a live soundtrack for Bruce Brown’s classic surfing film The Endless Summer at Green Man Festival. The band wrote eight new pieces and combined them with existing material to accompany the film. The project subsequently reached other venues, including Sensoria in Sheffield and the Cube Cinema in Bristol.

It demonstrated another side of the group: music that retained the immediacy of surf rock while following the dramatic and visual demands of a full-length film.

Live recordings and the archive

The Rumble-O’s have appeared at festivals including Glastonbury and Green Man, and their performances are documented in Gaz’s original blog. The group’s recording of Cash’n’Carry at the Cube provides a useful introduction to the sound of the band onstage.
