Live Work — Gaz Williams

Live Work

Playing music in the same room as other people has always been at the centre of what I do. This is an evolving record of tours, bands, unusual collaborations, film soundtracks and experiments on stage — from bass guitar to modular synthesizers.

Touring & staged productions

A selection of tours, album shows and theatre work. Dates are included where I have records to support them.

2012 · Paris

Pop’pea

I played bass in the rock-opera adaptation of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Théâtre du Châtelet. The production featured Marc Almond, Carl Barât, Benjamin Biolay and a large international cast.

2013 · Live shows

David Rhodes

Bass with David Rhodes, long-time guitarist for Peter Gabriel, in a trio with drummer Ged Lynch. Performances included a studio concert and outdoor show in Liechtenstein supporting the album Rhodes.

2013 · World tour

Karl Hyde — Edgeland

I played bass on Karl Hyde’s Edgeland tour alongside Angie Pollock and Peter Chilvers, including shows in Japan and at London’s Union Chapel. The tour brought together songs from Edgeland and selected Underworld material.

The Charlatans support tour

Martin Carr / What Future

I played bass in Martin Carr’s band What Future alongside Bernie Plain and Matthew Frederick, supporting The Charlatans on their anniversary tour. The public listings document UK dates in November–December 2021.

2015–2016 · Afrobeat

Matuki

I played bass with Bristol Afrobeat band Matuki, led by singer and percussionist Ebou Sanyang, and produced the group’s debut album Injo, released in 2016. The band’s large ensemble combined West African rhythmic traditions, guitars, horns and funk.

Live collaboration

Tanya Walker

I’ve played live with Welsh singer-songwriter Tanya Walker. Her song Good Days, Bad Days won the global Talent Is Timeless songwriting competition in 2023.

Bands, orchestras & collaborations

Some were regular bands, others temporary line-ups or one-off performance projects.

Psych / space rock · Live film scores

Asteroid Deluxe

The improvising band I started with Andy Taylor and James Phillips. We later made full-length live scores for The Holy Mountain and Fantastic Planet at Green Man, and released The Lawn on vinyl.

Bristol · Orchestra

The Fantasy Orchestra

Performing with Jesse D Vernon’s large, gloriously eclectic orchestra — on bass and later singing. Appearances included St George’s, Green Man, Bristol Museum and the Cube, among others.

Cardiff · Art rock

Rocketgoldstar

A long-running Cardiff musical home, with unusual songs, inventive arrangements and some gloriously ambitious live performances. The dedicated archive collects photographs, recordings and stories.

Cardiff · Original songs

Colum Regan

Playing bass with singer-songwriter Colum Regan, including a 2015 performance at the Four Bars in Cardiff. I also produced his 2012 album Hotel.

Cardiff · Formed around 2001

Chuckle Egg

A Cardiff-based acoustic covers band formed around 2001. One of the many different settings in which I’ve enjoyed the straightforward pleasure of playing songs with other people.

2016–2026 · Live band

Charlotte Church’s Pop Dungeon

I played bass in Pop Dungeon from its beginnings in 2016 through the 2026 End Times tour. The dedicated page includes the story, recordings, photographs and live reviews.

Bristol · Surf rock

The Rumble-O’s

An ongoing antidote to complex electronic setups: bass, guitar, drums and plenty of energy. Our work also included performing a new live soundtrack to the surfing film The Endless Summer.

2018 · The Cube

Playing Daevid Allen — Gong tribute

A one-off performance of Gong’s Camembert Electrique at the Cube in Bristol, with players drawn from several local groups and a glissando-guitar ensemble.

Improvised & electronic performances

A growing part of my live work involves modular synthesizers, improvisation and responsive performance with other musicians.

Modular synthesizers + acoustic drums

quasimodal

Greg White and I improvise pieces without pre-arranged structures or a click track. One live show was at the JamJar; I’m collecting that footage alongside our other performances and recordings.

Improvised electronics · Rack Records

Steve Davis & Gaz Williams

Our live sets are spontaneous electronic conversations rather than conventional arrangements. Rack Records documents the performances, with visuals often provided by Sloon.

Bristol · Large ensemble

Kevin Figes — Sound Dimensions

Playing analogue synthesizers as part of Kevin Figes’ expansive twenty-piece Sound Dimensions ensemble, bringing electronic sound into an orchestral setting.

Early solo modular performances

Bad Workman

A temporary name for my first live modular experiments, when I was learning to make room for unpredictability and mistakes onstage. The archive now lives in Musical Mischief.

An archive in progress

This is a starting point rather than a complete gig history. There are many more bands, sessions, collaborations and odd occasions to add as I remember them. I’ll keep expanding the entries with photographs, dates, recordings, videos and stories.
